VOLUNTEERS
| WHO: |
Volunteers for our organization are compassionate
and generous people. NWL seeks volunteers that can read,
write, and speak English well and have a genuine interest in helping others with various
backgrounds (women, the poor, ethnic people, learning disabled,
inmates, and children) improve their literacy skills (reading,
writing, grammar, math, financial, health). We desire people of
all ages to be involved and do not discriminate.
|
| WHAT: |
After completing tutor training, volunteers meet with a
learner/learners at a public location to assist the learners with their
individual literacy needs using various curriculum and resources for
tutoring.
|
| WHEN: |
Volunteers are asked to meet 1-2 hours
weekly at a time that is convenient to both volunteer and learner.
|
| WHERE: |
Volunteers meet at a public location that is
convenient to both volunteer and learner. These locations vary.
Some locations are libraries, schools, churches, senior centers, and/or
community centers.
|
| WHY: |
Volunteers are rewarded with the feeling
of making a lasting positive influence not only on a learner but a
community. The individualized instruction that volunteers give
produces self-confidence, awareness and knowledge for our learners which
is necessary for these individuals to reach goals, better themselves and be
comfortable living in society.
